O'Neil was a student in high-school when she auditioned in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. She was able to make it into the top 100 rounds when judges applauded her vocal ability. O'Neil was given high marks by the jury. She suffered significant defeats during the top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up on the third row, followed by the in the bottom two. Judges were shocked at this, and instructed the crowd to vote for contestants like Melissa, who had most impressive singing talent. O'Neil did not make it to the bottom 3 again after an impressive string of performances. O'Neil's performance on the 7th September, 2005 was so impressive that judge Werner predicted the news headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil was contacted immediately from Canadian Premier Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
